Here at Jurnfern Art, our mission is to celebrate Black beauty and talent in the fashion industry. Each of our illustrations is inspired by a Black individual making a name for themselves in fashion. Therefore, in the spirit of celebrating, as part of our NYFW coverage we are highlighting 5 breakout Black models from the Spring 2022 runways. Keep reading to learn more about these Black beauties!
Aaron Philip
Aaron Philip breaks down the barriers around what a model 'should' look like, and looks beautiful doing it. The high fashion industry a lot of times fails to acknowledge the disabled community, but they are just as deserving of representation as any other marginalized group. A person's physical appearance or capabilities should not determine their access to anything, including clothing. Being the first Black, transgender, and disabled model to be signed to an agency, I hope that following Philip's runway debut this season, more designers will take notice of where they may be falling short in this department.
Saibatou Toure
Pictured here is beautiful breakout model Saibatou Toure making her NYFW runway debut with Proenza Schouler. Having also walked in shows this season like Moschino, Carolina Herrera, and Tom Ford, it is clear that Toure has an amazing runway presence and a versatile look. We are looking forward to following her blossoming career!
Daisy Oh
Daisy Oh completed her first NYFW this season, beginning with Proenza Schouler, and pictured here walking for Coach. Oh wears clothes with beauty and ease, and it feels like she brings a little something special to every look she wears. We are excited to see what the future holds for her!
Mari Taylor
Originally discovered in Tennessee, Mari Taylor recently made her runway debut with Coach in 2019. She then continued to walk for brands like Prada and Miu Miu, as well as be featured in several amazing editorials for magazines including Vogue Italia. Though, Taylor has just barely cracked the surface of her full potential. Her walk for Ulla Johnson pictured here was only her first runway walk post-Covid, so we are expecting more great things from her in the near future! We also love Taylor for her commitment to representing natural Black hair in the fashion industry. She has spoken out on her experiences on set in which hair stylists are unequipped to style Black hair - something that can be a major hinderance and inconvenience on a Black model trying to do their job. One of Taylor's goals as a model is to increase representation of Black hair textures in fashion.
Zan Hyde
Zan Hyde made her runway debut last year at just eighteen. Her major runway moment this NYFW season came at the Jonathan Simkhai show pictured above. Hyde's look is so edgy and striking, that it is hard not to notice her in a sea of models. We are looking forward to seeing what Hyde has ahead of her!
